More than 6,000 unsigned bands and artists entered NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, our search to find a great undiscovered talent to perform at the most famous desk in music. Our judges picked one winner — violinist Gaelynn Lea — but in the process, we found countless reasons to celebrate the creativity and musicianship embedded in every community across the country.
Now, NPR Music and Lagunitas Brewing Company, the sponsor of the Tiny Desk Contest since its launch in 2014, are teaming up with our friends at KUTX to bring tunes from the Tiny Desk Contest to Austin and cities around the U.S. Join KUTX and NPR Music staff for this private, invitation-only celebration of the Austin musical community, including live performances by some of our favorite local Tiny Desk Contest entrants.
The Cactus Cafe is a live music venue and bar in the historic Texas Union on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. Located in Austin, Texas, a city frequently referred to as “the live music capital of the world,” a number of well-known artists have played in the Cactus, and Billboard Magazine named it as one of fifteen “solidly respected, savvy clubs” in the United States, “from which careers can be cut, that work with proven names and new faces.”
